Fixing hot water system

“We’ve got no hot water!”

Running cold this morning? Start here.

If you’ve just turned on the tap and it’s running cold, you’re not alone, no hot water and hot water not working are two of the most common calls we take. Before you book, two quick checks can save you a visit:

  • Gas system? Check the pilot light is lit and the gas is on at the meter.

  • Electric system? Check the switch/circuit hasn’t tripped at the board.

If those look fine, or you can see water pooling around the tank, rust streaks, or hear the unit straining, leave it to us. A leaking tank won’t fix itself, and the longer it sits, the higher the risk of water damage to your floors and cabinetry. Call 0422 704 670 and we’ll aim to be there the same day.

Emergency hot water? Burst tank or major leak, turn off the water at the isolation valve and the power/gas to the unit, then call us. We carry common parts on the van to fix many faults on the first visit.

What We Fix

Hot water repairs

Most hot water problems are repairable, and a repair is almost always cheaper than a new unit. You get an honest assessment first: if it’s worth fixing, we fix it; if it’s near the end of its life, we’ll tell you straight. Here are some common faults we repair.

No hot water or lukewarm water

Failed heating element or thermostat (electric), or a faulty gas valve / ignition (gas).

Leaking tank or fittings

Corroded cylinder, perished seals, or a weeping relief valve.

Water too hot or fluctuating

Faulty tempering/thermostatic mixing valve or thermostat.

Discoloured or smelly water

Sediment build-up; often solved with a flush and anode check.

Constantly dripping relief valve

A pressure or expansion issue, not just a “drip to ignore”.

Pilot light won’t stay lit / no ignition

Thermocouple or gas-supply fault.

We service all major brands such as Rheem, Rinnai, Dux, Vulcan, Sanden, Bosch, Aquamax, Stiebel Eltron, Thermann and carry common spare parts, so many repairs are done in a single visit.

Pay over time with Brighte

Interest-free payment plans on hot water, repipes & bigger jobs.

Replace & install

The honest repair-vs-replace call

If your system is 10–15+ years old, leaking from the tank itself, or failing repeatedly, replacement usually makes more financial sense than another patch-up. A rusted-through cylinder can’t be repaired, once it’s leaking from the tank, it’s replacement time.

Replacement hot water system

Hot Water System Replacement

You won’t be pushed toward the most expensive option. We’ll talk you through:

  • Whether a like-for-like swap or an efficiency upgrade is the smarter spend
  • The right size for your household, so you never run out mid-shower
  • A total fixed price upfront, supply, install and old-unit removal included

Most straightforward replacements are completed same day, so you’re not left without hot water overnight.

Installing new hot water system

New Hot Water Installation

Building, renovating, or moving a system? Get it installed to AS/NZS 3500 standards, with:

  • The correct tempering valve, safe 50°C to bathroom outlets
  • A compliant relief valve and tidy, code-compliant pipework
  • Gas connections and electrical sign-off coordination, the works

And we clean up before we leave. No mess, no surprises.

All Types

Every type of system, supplied, installed and serviced

Not sure which suits your home? Here’s the plain-English version. We’ll match the type, size and brand to how your household actually uses hot water, not just sell you what’s on the truck.

Rinnai Heat Pump

Heat pump

The most efficient option going. Works like a fridge in reverse, pulling heat from the air, using up to 70% less electricity than a standard electric tank. Best value once you factor in the government rebates below. Ideal for North Shore homes switching off gas or off an old electric tank.

Solar hot water

Solar hot water

Roof-mounted collectors with a tank, the lowest running cost in the right position, with electric or gas boost for cloudy days. Great for free-standing homes with good roof aspect.

Continuous flow gas hot water

Continuous flow gas

Endless hot water, heated on demand, no tank to run dry. Compact, so it’s good for smaller homes, units and tight spaces.

Gas storage hot water

Gas storage

Reliable, fast recovery, and a lower upfront cost where mains gas is available.

Electric hot water

Electric storage

The lowest upfront cost and simplest to install, but the highest to run, which is often the reason households upgrade to heat pump or solar.

Sizing Guide

What size hot water system do I need?

A rough guide for storage and heat pump tanks. We’ll confirm the right size on site so you never run out mid-shower.

HOUSEHOLD ELECTRIC / GAS STORAGE HEAT PUMP
1-2 people 125-170 L 200-250 L
3-4 people 250-315 L 270-280 L
5-6 people 315 L+ 300-315 L

Continuous flow gas is sized by flow rate (litres/min) and number of bathrooms rather than tank volume.

I needed my hot water system replaced. They gave me a quote in the morning and it was installed by the afternoon. The boys were fast, friendly, and efficient in getting the job done. Ready Set Plumb are always fairly priced as well.

Jackie Nugara

Our hot water system broke down yesterday morning. Sam recommended a replacement based on our needs. He and his team worked tirelessly to install and test our new system, ensuring that we had hot water that night. The price was very reasonable considering the work.

Donna Carruthers

They gave me quotes and explained what we would get. The job was carried out efficiently, the area was cleaned up, and the removal of the old system was organised by them. I was even given details of the warranty and simple instructions on how to relight the pilot light!

Neil Ohlback

I discovered late on Friday night that I had no hot water, with a weekend full of sports and dirty kids! I texted late, and early the next morning received his reply. Not only did he have a new unit ordered, but it was all fixed by that afternoon and his price was incredibly reasonable.

Danielle Whitmore

Very professional, arrived on time, did excellent work, and gave advice on my water heater. And much cheaper than two other quotes! I highly recommend them and will use them again.

Morton Henderson

Ryan provided excellent advice about my lack of hot water. He went out of his way on a Sunday to help. Thankfully he didn’t have to attend because his advice was so good!

Our Minimum Standards

No boot prints, no mess, no exceptions

Clean uniforms. Clean boots. Drop sheets down before we start. Tools, packaging, and offcuts out with us when we leave. If we need to open a wall or ceiling, we’ll tell you first and leave the area tidy.

  • Drop sheets laid before any work begins
  • Shoe covers worn inside your home
  • All debris, offcuts, and packaging removed when we leave
  • Work area left clean and tidy, not “tradie tidy,” actually tidy
  • Any access to walls, ceilings, or other areas discussed with you before we touch them
  • A walkthrough of the completed work before we pack up

You won’t find boot prints on your tiles or copper shavings in your bath. That’s not a bonus we charge for. It’s the minimum standard.

FAQ

Hot Water Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the things people ask us most when something’s gone wrong.

It depends on the type and size, but as a guide most replacements range from around $1,200 for a basic electric storage swap up to $3,000–$4,500+ for a heat pump before rebates and government rebates can bring a heat pump down significantly. We quote a fixed price upfront, including supply, installation and removal of the old unit, so there are no surprises.
A heat pump is the cheapest to run for most homes, it uses up to 70% less electricity than a standard electric tank. Solar hot water can be even cheaper where the roof aspect suits it, especially paired with solar panels. Old electric storage systems are the most expensive to run.
Yes. The NSW Energy Savings Scheme gives an upfront discount (typically around $400–$675 for an electric-to-heat-pump replacement), and federal STCs add a further discount, the two are stackable. We’ll check your eligibility and handle the eligible paperwork.
Most storage systems last 8–15 years; continuous flow gas and quality heat pumps can run longer with servicing. If yours is past 10–12 years and playing up, it’s worth getting a repair-or-replace assessment.
Generally a 250–315 L electric/gas storage tank or a 270–280 L heat pump suits a family of four. Continuous flow gas is sized by flow rate instead. We’ll confirm the right size on site so you never run out mid-shower.
